"Our Literacy Journey"

It is the mission of the Stafford Public Schools, to provide a comprehensive literacy program that is rigorous and supports 21st century learning.  In an effort to meet the demands of the common core standards, Stafford Public Schools immerses students in a balanced literacy approach. This means, students engage in all sorts of activities throughout the course of the day to build on all components of language development including speaking, listening, reading, and writing experiences. It is our goal to ensure a high quality foundational and core program that meets the needs of all learners.

Foundational Literacy

Stafford Public Schools is proud to welcome the  Wilson Fundations Program to our Grade 2 classrooms this year. Fundations is an integrated multi-sensory approach, that overlaps skills so students experience the connections between all elements of literacy.  Program elements include phonic/word study, letter formation, and handwriting. We are in the final year of the rollout of the program. Students are tapping and marking their way to developing their foundations of literacy skills.

Readers' and Writers' Workshop

The Workshop Model is designed to provide a deliberate and student-centered instructional focus that integrates instructional mini-lessons with small group work and teachers conferring with readers to provide immediate feedback and support to individual readers.

Teacher Spotlight

Stafford Public Schools looks to develop teacher leaders both in and out of the classroom environment.  Each month we will look to recognize one of our outstanding literacy educators instructional practices as we develop the next generation of readers and writers.

This month, we recognize:

Mrs. Amy Losee, Grade 4 Classroom Teacher

This month we would like to spotlight Mrs. Losee, Grade 4 Teacher. Mrs. Losee, along with several of her students and their families, met weekly to participate in a book club.  Students and families read the story, "Because of the Rabbit," by Cynthia Lord. Students engaged in book discussions, played games, and won prizes! Families enjoyed this wonderful opportunity and many are already asking when the next book club will begin.  During these long winter months, especially with the pandemic, there's nothing better to do than to enjoy a great novel. It is even better, when you can enjoy it with your family and friends! Thank you, Mrs. Losee for facilitating such a great experience.

Accelerated Reader Celebrations Around the District!

Both the middle school and the elementary school took time this past week to celebrate students that used the Accelerated Reader tool! The middle school students enjoyed an extended mask break with a snack and a trip outdoors, while the elementary school enjoyed a Myth Busters video and some popcorn. Congratulations to all that participated!

Partners in Literacy

It is our goal to help students in Stafford  become confident and passionate readers! There are many ways that you can also help students  become passionate about their reading!

Make reading a part of a routine everyday. If you make reading a special  part of your day, students will learn to love it as well.

You can choose to read books with your students and go on an adventure, exploring different genres! Students will discover their own interests and passions as they learn about different types of books.

Don't forget! Reading is a language activity. One of the best ways to build language experiences is to talk with your students. Have conversations about the books you read!

Find books on common interests!
